DIGON PSYCHOLOGY

Dr. Amy Hawkins, Clinical Psychologist

Why Digon Psychology?

A digon is a shape with two sides and two corners.

It represents the possibility of turning a corner through talking to understand ‘the other side of the story’, moving away from the problem and focusing on strengths, skills and resilience.

ABOUT ME

BSc(Hons) DClinPsy, HCPC Reg PYL32862

I am a London-based qualified clinical psychologist registered with the Health Care Professions Council.  I have over 10 years of experience working in the NHS and charity sectors with adults, young people and children.  I am used to working with individuals, couples and family groups.  I draw from a range of evidence-based therapeutic models to promote collaboration in therapy.  I have additional training in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Systemic and Family Therapy and Narrative Therapy.

My specialist interest is the psychological impact of physical health issues or disability.

WHAT IS A CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST?

A clinical psychologist is a health professional with a doctoral level degree in the applied science of mind and behaviour, as well as clinical experience supporting children, adults and older adults experiencing distress. ‘Clinical psychologist’ is a protected title requiring professional registration with a regulatory body (HCPC).  You can trust that a clinical psychologist has met academic and clinical standards which enable them to practise ethically and effectively.

A counsellor or psychotherapist have had training in therapy skills and clinical experience using these, but are not required to have a doctoral level qualification.  They may voluntarily register with professional bodies such as the BACP or UKCP, though there is not a legal standard for using these titles.  Unlike psychiatrists (medical doctors), clinical psychologists do not prescribe medication and draw from specialist knowledge of a wide range of talking therapies to provide a personalised approach to your needs.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Initial consultation

In the first session, the psychologist will start to get to know you: what is important to you, what is going well, what you hope to change.  The psychologist will ask what has been tried so far to manage any difficulties.

Where the support is for a child or young person (under 16), the psychologist may meet with the child and parent together, or individually, or a combination of both.  Child and young person assessments will be informed by their age and developmental stage.  Creativity features wherever possible, using drawing, crafts, toys and games.

At the end of an initial consultation, we will discuss options for continued therapy, tailored recommendations, and other resources or signposting.  A written summary of the assessment can be provided.

Therapy may be short-term or longer-term.  A plan for a suggested number of sessions, and the frequency of these, will be discussed with you at the end of the initial consultation.

Talking Therapy

Sessions generally last 50 minutes and will take place at an agreed location.

Initial sessions will include further discussion of hopes and goals for the work.  The approach used may be based upon a particular model, or draw from several models, depending on your needs.

Feedback will be sought from you at regular intervals to ensure you are finding sessions as helpful as possible.

You can discuss with the psychologist whether you have a preference for anyone to join you in sessions.
